Basic dog hygiene helps avoid parasite infections, do not hold on to food remains and the dog’s container should be cleaned once the animal is done eating. Humid, uneaten food should be put away in the fridge to avoid germ development and undesired bacteria. Food stored at low temperatures should be covered with a lid or a protective plastic film. This way it can be served during the next meal.
Prolonged light, heat or humidity exposition is detrimental to dry food. These should be kept in their original container, usually paper, or stored in plastic recipients or specially prepared metal. If croquettes are mossy, they should be thrown out and the container should be disinfected.
In addition to these measures, an anthalmintic should be applied every six months.
The dog’s education should be as coherent as possible. If it is forbidden to beg, it shouldn’t be provided with snacks between hours from time to time. If you don’t want it to steal food, you shouldn’t leave anything at its reach, since in these cases opportunity makes the thief.
Contrary to naïve people that believe and want to convince us that a dog is “practically a human being”, we should never forget that a dog is a domestic carnivore. Even though it doesn’t hunt for food and enjoys certain comforts, that doesn’t mean that we need to be too condescending to it.
An adult dog eats at regular hours once or twice a day. The species is home – loving by nature, for which there is no reason for the owner to feel guilty if the dog is not with him or her at the table.
When several dogs live under the same roof, it’s convenient to adopt the same educational principles for all of them.
Also, each family member and people that tend to the animals in our absence should know the establish rules and abide to them as much as ourselves.
