Patterdale Terrier
There was a time in history that there were almost one different and unique species of the terrier breed that originated from each isolated village in different parts of north England. However, it is due to the breeding to the numerous kennel club standards, these numbers came down. There are still a few of these breeds that met the kennel club requirements and were officially named as a breed and were soon known almost all over the world. The patterdale terrier is one of these breeds of dog. However, these dogs are very rare and very difficult to find. These dogs are practically unknown to the any part of the world outside that of the Great Britain.
These dogs are said to originate from the Great Britain, and more specifically, in the Lake District situated in Yorkshire. These dogs get their name from a village known as patterdale, this is because it is said that these dogs were extremely common in this village. These dogs were mainly used for the purpose of hunting, especially for the hunting of animals like rat, fox and rabbit as well. These dogs are not at all popular for their appearances, as a matter of fact, appearance is not even among the top 5 reasons why these dogs were bred and developed. The main reason for the breeding and the development of these dogs is their agility.
These dogs are known to have a very strong head and an equally powerful one as well. Their heads are in perfect balance and in perfect proportion with the rest of their body. When these dogs are viewed from the front, their heads appear to have a shape of a wedge or a trapezoid. Their skull is also in perfect proportion with the rest of the body. Their muzzle also being in perfect proportion with their size, when measured length wise, is quite equal to the length of the skull. Their muzzles should always be strong and not even for a second should they appear wither weak or snippy.
They have a set of full, strong and powerful teeth. These teeth meet to form a very painful scissor bite. However, if their teeth are broken or the incisors are removed due to the work that they are given to do, then this should not at all be penalized. They have a pair of squarely shaped eyes. These eyes of theirs are set quite wide apart from each other. It is very important their eyes do not protrude out or bulge, this is because of the fact they are earth working animals. Their eyes can be colored on any possible color as long as it is in harmony with the color of the coat of the dog. However blue colored eyes are highly undesirable by any breeders. They have a pair of triangular shaped ears. These ears are generally folded tightly just above their skull. They have a very clean neck. They have a pair of long and sloping shoulders.
